UPDATE: 33 People confirmed dead from the bus accident in Nithi Bridge

At least 30 people have now been confirmed dead from the bus accident that occurred Sunday evening at Nithi Bridge in Tharaka Nithi County.

Area County Commissioner Nobert Komora confirmed Monday morning that six more bodies were retrieved from the wreckage Monday morning.

The accident happened some minutes before 7 pm Sunday where 24 passengers traveling on the ill-fated bus were immediately confirmed to have lost their lives.

The rescue and search operations had been called off Sunday night and they resumed Monday morning.

There are fears that more fatalities will be confirmed in the course of the day amid revelations that some of the passengers might have been swept away by the river.

The bus was traveling from Maua in Meru and headed for Mombasa when it fell into the river that is 40 meters below. The area is marked as a black spot.

Preliminary investigations indicate the bus belonging to Modern Coast developed brake failure and the driver could not negotiate the sharp corner at the bridge.

Those who sustained injuries were rushed to the nearby Chuka and Chogoria hospitals.

Rescue teams remain at the scene and more updates on the accident will be made as the day progresses.
