Wife of Buruburu police officer says son’s death drove husband into alcohol: “He found solace in alcohol”

The widow of a Buruburu policeman who was discovered dead hours after a video of him stumbling around the streets went viral describes the grief her husband endured after the passing of their son.

Hours after the National Police Service approved disciplinary action against him when the video went viral online, 42-year-old Harrison Mugo Mwangi was discovered dead in his Buruburu home.

In an interview with the Daily Nation, the deceased’s widow Judy Wambui Mugo praised her husband as a kind and kind guy who was still grieving the loss of his son in 2019.

“Whenever he was home, he spoke about our son. It really affected him. It seems he found solace in alcohol,” she said.

When Wambui returned home, he would only talk about their deceased relative’s son, who died in a car accident only days before he took his Kenya Certificate of Primary School examinations, Wambui claimed.

His coworkers agreed, stating that Mugo had been struggling since since his son passed away.

“He always told us about his son who died three years ago. One could tell that he was not doing well,” said a colleague.

According to prior reports, the law enforcement official killed himself after receiving criticism from the National Police Service for seeming intoxicated in the video.

According to a police report, the officer was discovered dead in his Buruburu home, and his body was taken there to be preserved for an autopsy.

The OB report stated that the deceased cop was the one whose video went viral yesterday after he was caught on camera acting erratically and inebriated while wearing a police uniform.

“The deceased officer was the one whose clip went viral yesterday after he was filmed being drunk and disorderly while in police uniform, and disciplinary action had been taken against him,” the OB report indicated.
NPS condemns officer.

On Wednesday, July 6, the NPS, through its spokesperson Bruno Shioso condemned the officer after the video surfaced on social media.

“National Police Service (NPS) has taken note of a video clip circulating on social media where a uniformed police officer is seen walking alone while appearing drunk.

“Buruburu Police command has taken corrective measures for the situation, and the matter is being handled internally. As NPS, we hold our officers accountable with regard to matters of discipline, decorum, and conduct to ensure efficient and effective service provision to the public,” he said.
