UPDATE! Cartoonist Kibet Bull released after 1 weeks in abduction

Gideon Kibet, popularly known as Kibet Bull, a digital cartoonist famed for his caricatured silhouettes of President William Ruto, has been released following his abduction in Nairobi last month.

Kibet was reportedly taken by individuals suspected to be security officers on December 24, 2024, shortly after meeting Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah at the senator’s office in Nairobi.

His family confirmed his safe return on Monday, adding that Kibet had traveled back to Nakuru. Stranded and uncertain of what to do upon his release, Kibet reportedly attended a local “disco matanga” (overnight funeral dance) before securing a bus ticket home.

Kibet’s release is the latest in a series of mysterious disappearances and reappearances that have gripped the nation, prompting widespread concern. His case is one of five recent abductions involving missing persons who have suddenly resurfaced in different locations across the country.

On the same day, the families of four other abductees—Billy Mwangi, Peter Muteti, Bernard Kavuli, and Rony Kiplangat—reported hearing from their loved ones. Mwangi and Muteti have already reunited with their families.

Citizen Digital established that Rony Kiplangat, who was abducted in Nairobi, was located in Machakos County, while Bernard Kavuli, taken from Ngong, was found in Kitale.

In a statement issued on Monday, the National Police Service (NPS) acknowledged the rising cases of abductions and confirmed the safe return of several individuals.

According to the NPS, Billy Mwangi, Peter Muteti, and Rony Kiplangat have reunited with their families after cases were filed at Embu Police Station, Kabete Police Station, and Thogoto Police Post, respectively. Bernard Kavuli, whose disappearance had been reported at Ngong Police Station, voluntarily presented himself at Moi’s Bridge Police Station, where he is now assisting investigators.

The NPS has urged members of the public to report any suspicious activities and assured the public of ongoing efforts to address the alarming trend of abductions.
