Super Metro Sacco has been granted permission to resume operations after the Transport Licensing Appeal Board temporarily lifted the suspension imposed by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).
In an order issued on Monday, March 24, 2025, the board ruled in favor of Super Metro, allowing the public service vehicle (PSV) operator to return to the roads with immediate effect.
“An interim order is hereby issued staying the execution/enforcement/operation of the decision of the respondents dated March 18, 2025, suspending the operation of the appellant herein, Super Metro Sacco Limited, as a PSV operator,” read part of the order issued by board chairman Adrian Kamotho.
Kamotho further instructed that the order be served to the Inspector General of Police immediately to ensure compliance.
Background of the Suspension
Super Metro’s operations were suspended by NTSA on March 20, 2025, over alleged non-compliance with road safety regulations. The transport authority cited several violations, including expired inspection certificates, expired road service licenses, and failure to maintain updated speed limiter records.
In its statement, NTSA explained that the suspension was necessary to ensure the safety of passengers and road users. “This is to notify the public that the Authority has suspended Super Metro Limited’s operator license until the company fully complies with the Public Service Vehicles Regulations, 2014, and other set conditions,” read part of the NTSA statement.
The authority also raised concerns over driver qualifications, stating that some of the company’s drivers did not meet the required standards. A retest conducted on March 10, 2025, found that 64 Super Metro drivers failed, leading to the suspension of their licenses.
Conditions for Reinstatement
Before resuming operations, Super Metro was required to meet several conditions, including:
- Presenting 294 vehicles with various violations to speed limiter vendors for compliance checks.
- Subjecting all vehicles with violations to inspection at the Likoni Motor Vehicle Inspection Centre.
- Ensuring 42 drivers with speed violations undergo a retest at the Likoni Driver Test Centre.
Super Metro’s Compliance Efforts
Following NTSA’s conditions, Super Metro presented its fleet for inspection at the Likoni Road Motor Vehicle Inspection Centre in Nairobi’s Industrial Area on Saturday, March 22, 2025.
With the court’s ruling now in place, the company can resume its transport services while ensuring full compliance with NTSA regulations.
The decision comes as a relief to thousands of commuters in Nairobi and its environs who rely on Super Metro for daily transport.
