Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has paid Ksh 100K fine for Alvin Linus Chivondo, the man who was fined for stealing sugar, cooking oil and rice from Naivas.
Sonko visited him in the evening and cleared the fine, allowing the court to set him free.
According to Sonko, he was moved by Chivondo’s predicament, noting that he was an example of majority of Kenyans are languishing in poverty.
Sonko has also promised to get Alvin a well paying job plus a one month shopping.
“Majority of Kenyans are languishing in poverty even to afford a daily meal for their families is a
problem it is because of this reason that I decided to pay the fine for Alvin. I have also
promised to give him a one month food stock plus offer him a job as well,”Sonko stated.
The ODM leader Raila Odinga had also demanded the unconditional release of Alvin Chivondo, a Kenyan who was sentenced to one year in prison for theft.
In the alternative, Chivondo was fined Sh100,000 by the court for shoplifting Sh3,165 worth of products from a Naivas supermarket.
5 kilograms of rice, 5 litres of frying oil, and 2 kilograms of sugar were among the items.
