Melida Auma, mother to slain Rongo University student Sharon Otieno, has announced her intentions to seek the Homa Bay Town West MCA seat through Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance(UDA) party.
Her quest comes almost three years since her daughter and her unborn child were brutally murdered by unknown assailants. DNA reports presented in court indicated that Migori governor Zachary Okoth Obado was the father of the unborn child.
Auma has thrust herself in politics and believes she stands a chance of beating the Orange Democratic Movement wave in the region. She has been actively involved in rallying residents to join the newfangled political outfit.
She says UDA is the ideal party for any aspirant with the urge of articulating pertinent issues that affect Kenyans.
“I would have wanted ODM, but it is very difficult to get a ticket there. Furthermore, leaders from ODM who had vowed to stand with us before Sharon’s burial abandoned us immediately we lowered her body into the grave,” she noted.
Mrs Auma took a swipe at ODM politicians who promised to shoulder the burden of paying fees for three children left behind by Sharon.
The ward representative hopeful believes that once she bags the political seat, she will be at a good position to better the lives of her children and grandchildren.
Already, she says she is getting the support she needs even though little.
“I decided to try the MCA seat because I want a better life for my children and grandchildren. It is tough, but I will try,” she notes.
She also claims that a section of politicians, who actively practice law, also vowed to offer pro bono services for the family in court but later turned their backs on them.
“These people were only after political mileage. They forgot us. They stopped picking our calls as soon as we interred our daughter’s remains,” Mrs Auma said.
