Gospel singer Rufftone, whose official name is Smith Mwatia, has come out to defend his bid to run for the Nairobi Senatorial seat in the August general elections.
Rufftone has been facing criticism since he announced his interest to join politics months ago. His critics have been insisting that the political duties he is yearning for will contradict his integrity as a gospel minister.
Rufftone thinks differently about this issue.
In an interview with the SPM Buzz, Rufftone explained that his critics’ concerns are influenced by misunderstandings and misconceptions that ministers of the word of God cannot venture. He even gave an example of King David, whom God considered his messenger, but was a great king.
“There has been a serious misconception about politics and salvation. King David in the Bible was a politician and also a musician. It is biblical,” he explained.
However, the singer admitted that maintaining integrity in a political office can be challenging. He advised men of God called into leadership to uphold integrity regardless of the difficulties they face, claiming that some people have managed successfully.
He stated, “Once you have been called into leadership as a man of God, walk with integrity. It is not easy but there are those who did it.”
He went to campaign for himself as to why he is the best choice for the people of Nairobi. He promised to be the voice of the voiceless by breaking the barriers between rich and poor people.
“I will break the barrier between the haves and the have-nots. I will speak for the voiceless,” he assured.
Interestingly, Rufftone wanted to run under the UDA ticket, but the party resolved to give Bishop Margret Wanjiru a direct ticket to be the flag bearer in the hotly contested seat.
Rufftone is yet to confirm whether he will run as an independent candidate like his fellow artist, MC Jessy after he was also denied a ticket in favor of his opponent.
