The Senate was thrown into confusion on Thursday when Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua went missing during a plenary session where he was set to testify.
His legal team abruptly paused their defense and raised concerns to Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, requesting additional time to locate him.
The situation escalated after Speaker Kingi called on Gachagua’s team to present him as a witness, but the deputy president could not be found, prompting a dramatic pause in proceedings.
“Honourable Speaker, we are waiting for the deputy president and my colleagues can stand in for me, let me make enquiries where he is,” Senior Counsel Paul Muite pleaded with Speaker Kingi.
The Senators who were seated hearing the proceedings called on the speaker to adjourn the proceedings.
Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale while addressing the plenary, called on Speaker Kingi to suspend the proceedings until the deputy president was availed.
His lawyer Paul Muite has requested the speaker to allowed to go check on him and come back to the house with feedback.
“My proposal is that you give me the rest of the day to have an assessment of the DP situation and come back by 5 pm after seeing him and speaking to the doctor,” Muite said.
The speaker has suspended the seating until 5PM when hearing shall resume.
