According to a new study conducted by the Media Council of Kenya (MCK), between April and June 2022, the former prime minister Raila Odinga received more cover than William Ruto, across all media types, including broadcast, print, and online.

An analysis of media coverage of the 2022 general election campaign was conducted by the Media Council of Kenya (MCK), and it found that Raila had 865,665 radio voice shares while Ruto had only 549,338.
President Uhuru Kenyatta’s handshake partner watched 2,471, 594 seconds of mainstream television during the review period, compared to Ruto’s 1,224, 417 seconds.

For instance, during the three months, 336 pieces about Deputy President William Ruto were reported by KTN News as opposed to 495 stories about Raila Odinga.
Compared to William Ruto’s 279 articles, Citizen TV ran 486 pieces about Azimio la Umoja, the candidate for the One Kenya alliance.
Out of the 495 items that were covered by 13 local dailies, including the Star, The Standard, The People Daily, and Daily Nation, 266 stories about Raila and 209 stories on William Ruto were published.
The coverage of Kenya Kwanza, which has surpassed Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya alliance, has increased on radio, which continues to be the king in encouraging diversity in reporting.
The article concentrated on how the 17 presidential contenders who showed up for the IEBC clearance and registration and displayed considerable interest in the position had been covered by the mainstream media.
This comes even as the Deputy President withdrew from this year’s presidential debate over unfair treatment terming the exercise as a “waste of time.”
