Many people are envious of the extravagant lifestyle that renowned radio host Maina Kageni leads.
The news that Maina, a resident of Karen, Nairobi, pays his housekeeper KSh 30,000 a month shocked his listeners.
During a conversation about why young people are impatient to succeed in life with his co-host Daniel “Churchill” Ndambuki, nicknamed Mwalimu King’ang’i, Maina questioned why people are still paid poorly.
Churchill described how he made KSh 2,000 on his first job at KBC.
“Mimi nilikuwa nalipwa KSh 2,000 per month KBC radio theatre because every week I was being paid KSh 500 per play,” he recalled.
Maina couldn’t believe how Churchill used to survive with such a salary.
“Nilikuwa na operate by neema (I was operating by the grace of the Lord),” he said.
Churchill said he had to look for a side hustle, where he would earn KSh 3,000 plus his salary totalled to KSh 5,000.
“I was paying KSh 2,500,” he said.
The godfather of Kenyan comedy revealed he used to walk to and from work daily.
“Kukula unakula kwa barabara ukifika kwa nyumba unafaa kuwa umeshiba and somehow I survived.”
Churchill, who started his life in Eastlands, Nairobi, now lives large and is among the most successful Kenyans below 40 years old.
A listener called in during the morning conversation, and when he revealed he earns KSh 15,000, Maina couldn’t believe that.
“Unalipanga aje mfanyikazi wako (how much do you pay your househelp)?” Chuchill asked his co-host.
