President William Ruto has released an official statement following the elimination of Raila Odinga from the race for Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC).
Raila, who was Kenya’s candidate for the prestigious continental position, was knocked out in the sixth round of voting on Saturday, February 15, marking Kenya’s second unsuccessful attempt at securing the role.
In the statement, the government expressed gratitude to the African Union leadership for considering Raila’s vision and priorities for the continent.
“While the outcome of this election did not favour Kenya’s candidate, I wish to convey my deepest gratitude to the entire leadership of our great continent. Thank you for considering the Right Honourable Raila Odinga’s vision and priorities for the African Union and for according him the opportunity to share his passion for the continent’s transformation,” the statement read.
State House also extended congratulations to Mahmoud Ali Youssouf of Djibouti, who won the election in the seventh round, securing 33 votes to become the new AUC Chairperson. His deputy, Selma Haddadi, was also recognized in the statement.
“To their Excellencies Mahmoud Youssouf and Selma Haddadi, the Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission, I extend my sincere congratulations. You have the trust of the AU Assembly, and Kenya pledges her full support to you as you steer the African Union Commission to the next level.”
The government emphasized that the election was not about individuals or nations, but about the collective future of Africa.
“This election was not about individuals or nations, it was about Africa’s future. That future remains bright and, together, we will continue working for a united, prosperous, and influential Africa on the global stage,” the statement concluded.
The announcement underscores Kenya’s commitment to regional and continental cooperation, despite the setback. As Raila returns home, attention now shifts to his next political moves, with many speculating on his future in the Kenyan political landscape ahead of the 2027 General Election.
