Pope Francis has undergone urgent medical procedures after experiencing two episodes of acute respiratory insufficiency, the Vatican has announced.
The health scare was attributed to a buildup of endobronchial mucus, which triggered bronchospasms and made breathing difficult for the 87-year-old Pontiff.
According to a statement from the Vatican, doctors at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital performed two bronchoscopies to clear the excessive mucus from his airways.
Following the procedures, the Pope resumed non-invasive mechanical ventilation to support his breathing.
Despite the severity of the condition, Vatican officials assured the public that Pope Francis remained “vigilant, oriented, and cooperative” throughout the treatment. However, his prognosis remains uncertain as he continues to receive medical care.
“Today, the Holy Father suffered two episodes of acute respiratory insufficiency, caused by a significant accumulation of endobronchial mucus and consequent bronchospasm. Two bronchoscopies were therefore performed, with the need to remove large secretions. In the afternoon, non-invasive mechanical ventilation was resumed. The Holy Father remained alert, oriented and cooperative at all times. The prognosis remains guarded,” the statement read.
Pope Francis has faced several health challenges in recent years, including recurring respiratory issues and previous hospitalizations.
His latest health scare has sparked concern among Catholics worldwide, with many offering prayers for his swift recovery.
As he remains under close medical supervision, the Vatican is expected to provide further updates on his condition in the coming days.
