If you’ve ever driven through Globe Cinema Roundabout, you might have noticed something peculiar—motorists mysteriously stopping, reaching into their wallets, and handing over “voluntary donations” to officers who, let’s just say, were more interested in cash flow than traffic flow.
Well, their reign came to an abrupt end on February 12, 2025, when the long arm of the law finally tapped them on the shoulder—and not for a bribe this time!
A Not-So-Secret Operation
For months, Nairobi motorists and bodaboda riders had been crying foul over officers who seemed to think “To Serve and Protect” actually meant “To Stop and Collect.”
Acting on these numerous complaints, authorities decided enough was enough.
After a discreet surveillance operation, investigators uncovered what can only be described as a well-oiled extortion machine, running like clockwork every morning.
Armed with evidence, an elite team swooped in at 6:30 AM sharp—just in time for what was supposed to be another profitable rush hour.
But instead of counting their morning earnings in peace, three officers from Central Police Station found themselves getting a taste of their own medicine.
The Not-So-Lucky Trio
Meet the newest guests at the EACC Integrity Centre: Cpl Oscar Serem Biwott, PC Simon Kiplagat Nyunyutik, PC Edwin Benedict Mubweka.
In just two hours, these officers managed to amass a jaw-dropping Ksh48,250—a performance even seasoned bankers would envy. But just as they were likely planning how to split the loot over breakfast, BUSTED!
Destination: Integrity Centre, Then Kilimani Police Station
Following their arrest, the officers were escorted to EACC Integrity Centre, where they swapped their traffic wands for ballpoint pens, recording statements about their newfound misfortune.
They were later booked at Kilimani Police Station, marking the official end of their tax-free morning hustle.
A Brighter Future for Motorists?
As part of efforts to curb traffic corruption, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) is now working closely with the National Police Service (NPS) to audit and reform police traffic operations.
Hopefully, this means motorists can finally breathe easy knowing that stopping at Globe Cinema Roundabout won’t come with an unplanned “fine.”
Moral of the Story?
Next time you see a police officer waving you down at a roundabout, just make sure it’s for an actual traffic violation—not a “contribution” to their morning savings plan. Because as these three officers just learned, even crooked business has its traffic stops! 🚔😂
