Pipeline: The Nairobi’s darkest estate where residents use torches during the day

The most densely populated area in Kenya is Embakasi, according to data from the 2019 population and housing census by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS).

There were 988,808 people living in the Pipeline, Mukuru kwa Njenga, Kware, Tassia, and Imara Daima neighborhoods.

People who live in Pipeline’s high rise structures acknowledge the particular inconveniences that come with having such a large population.

Sammy Ohanga, a five-year resident of the region, complains to TUKO.co.ke about the absence of natural light in the lower floors of his apartment.

The homeowner of Plot 10 stated that as a result, people who live on the lower floors had to pay expensive electrical bills.

“I have to keep the lights on during the day because the house is too dark,” he said.

The lighting issue is inevitable as most buildings have little space between them as developers sought to maximise space.

For apartments where the lower floor is not lit during the day, tenants have to switch on their cell phone flashlights to safely use the stairs.

“We use flashlights in the daytime,” said Ohanga.

Olida Nthenya, a university student, noted that finding cell phone reception is also a challenge for some of those on the ground floor.

“When you get a phone call, you need to go to the balcony to receive it or you might not understand the caller.”
