Kenya Airways has confirmed the tragic death of an elderly passenger aboard its flight KQ003 from New York’s JFK International Airport to Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO). The incident occurred on Friday, April 11, 2025, prompting emergency measures mid-flight.
According to an official statement released by the airline’s Corporate Communications team, the passenger experienced a medical emergency at approximately 08:40 am Nairobi Time. The flight crew promptly alerted the Kenya Airways Operations Control Centre after the passenger collapsed. Following established international aviation medical protocols, three qualified medical professionals on board volunteered to assist with emergency procedures, utilizing onboard medical equipment.
In an effort to secure urgent medical attention, the flight diverted to Entebbe International Airport (EBB). Despite extensive resuscitation efforts, the passenger was pronounced dead at 09:10 am East Africa Time by the attending medics, before the aircraft could land.
Once the fatality was confirmed and in line with international aviation safety and operational protocols, the flight continued to Nairobi, arriving at 10:27 am. The airline confirmed that the aircraft was met by its contracted medical personnel, airport security, and relevant government officials to manage the situation.
Kenya Airways emphasized its commitment to supporting the family of the deceased, working closely with local authorities and aviation regulators to provide the necessary assistance and determine the cause of death. The airline expressed its condolences in the statement, saying, “Privacy and dignity for all involved remain our utmost priority.”
The identity of the deceased passenger has not been disclosed pending notification of next of kin.
