The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has instructed Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Nick Mwendwa to delicense Gor Mahia Football Club, the Premier League champions.
Gor, popularly known as K’Ogalo, was thrown out of the CAF Champions League on Thursday, July 20 for failing to follow the CAF Club Licensing Rules.
CAF claimed that Gor Mahia failed to meet many standards, including holding a legal license and providing financial assurances for three unpaid players.
Gor Mahia will not be able to compete in the CAF Champions League this season as a result of the ruling.
The team may possibly face a fine of Ksh1.4 million ($10,000) or more if the CAF Champions League dispute resolution committee rules in its favor.
CAF’s decision to dump Gor Mahia out of the Champions League is a setback for the club and Kenyan football, which has been trying to recover since the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) lifted its suspension.
Football experts warned that the CAF verdict was a reminder that the country’s club licensing standards must be prioritized.
CAF will implement a new Club Licensing Online Platform (CLOP) in July 2022 to oversee the licensing procedure as well as stadium inspections for continental and domestic events.
