Nilipoteza! Hellen Wendy’s classmate accused of stealing KSh100k burial money says she lost it
A Kenyan woman named Sarah Orege has passionately refuted allegations that she defrauded KSh 100,000 donated through a WhatsApp group intended to comfort the parents of the deceased Hellen Wendy.
After Wendy drowned in a swimming pool in Canada, Orege claimed they started a WhatsApp group in an effort to raise a sizable sum of money to help the grieving family.
She was tasked with gathering donations on behalf of the other group members at Itierio Girls High School in Kisii because she was her classmate there.
Speaking to TUKO, Orege claimed that instead of raising the rumored KSh 100,000, they really raised KSh 40,000.

She reported that one of the group members, Armor, who was calling from a US number, inboxed her in between the donations.
“This guy inboxed me and we became friends. For two to three weeks, we shared a lot. So one day he told me his bank cards were not operating and his sister was in hospital so he needed KSh 60,000 from me urgently,” said Orege.
The lady said, being kind-hearted, she first sent him KSh 5,000 and later another KSh 900.
She said she only had the aforementioned cash on her M-Pesa as she used to withdraw Wendy’s contribution and keep it as hard cash to avoid mixing it up with her personal money.
However, the man would keep calling her, asking for more money.
On the morning of the following day, she said Armor informed her that his sickly sister had died and he need cash.
“I felt pain. I blamed myself that I had failed to save her sister and I felt guilty. I told him I coul borrow for him some money,” she added.
Orege said she resolved to give the man the cash that had been contributed for Wendy and some of her personal money, which amounted to KSh 52,000, hoping that he would refund her before her burial.
Amor sent a man identified as Kevin to pick up the hard cash; thereafter, they went missing.
Realising that she had been conned, Orege informed a section of group members what had transpired.
She, however, said she did not pursue the alleged conmen as she hoped she would have replaced the cash before Wendy’s burial.
“I knew by the time the burial would be planned, I would have paid the cash. However, my plans did not go through and I was unable to raise the cash,” the lady painfully narrated.
She said she resolved to inform all the group members that she had been conned all the cash that they contributed.
However, her message was not received well. A series of insults from the members labelling her a thief followed.
Nevertheless, she asked members to give her a period of one week, she would have refunded the cash.
At the time of filing this report, she had already raised KSh 10,000 and sent it to Wendy’s family and hopes to deliver the remaining KSh 30,000 by this week.
