The National Commercial Bank of Africa (NCBA) has appointed James M. Gossip as its new Managing Director, a move that marks a major step in the bank’s strategic efforts to strengthen leadership and governance.
In a statement released on Thursday, NCBA confirmed that Gossip’s appointment follows the receipt of all requisite regulatory approvals and aligns with the strategic realignment of the Bank’s Board composition, which was announced in 2024.
“James is a seasoned international banking executive with over 30 years of experience in senior leadership roles across Europe, Asia, and North America,” the bank stated.
The appointment signals NCBA’s commitment to reinforcing strong, independent leadership and sound governance structures, as part of its long-term growth agenda.
Gossip brings a wealth of experience to NCBA, having held executive positions in some of the world’s leading financial institutions. Most recently, he served as Managing Director, Belt & Road Initiative and Business Corridors, Asia Pacific, at HSBC Global Services Limited in Hong Kong.
During his tenure at HSBC, he was instrumental in leading regional growth strategies, focusing on unlocking cross-border trade and investment flows within Asia and connecting them to global markets. He has also served on Executive Committees and Boards, with a notable track record in organisational transformation, operational management, and launching new market operations and controls.
While James M. Gossip takes on the role of Managing Director, John Gachora will continue to serve as the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.
Gachora will focus on expanding NCBA’s pan-African footprint, enhancing stakeholder relationships, and driving group-wide strategic cohesion and business growth.
“Our goal remains clear—to inspire greatness across Africa by strengthening our leadership and delivering value to all stakeholders,” said the bank.
Gossip’s appointment is expected to enhance NCBA’s ability to navigate the complexities of the regional and international financial landscape while positioning the bank for sustained growth and innovation.
