Detectives in Bomet Central have arrested the prime suspect in the brutal murder of Rachealine Rutto, a 45-year-old woman whose body was discovered in her home on March 25, 2025.
Rutto’s lifeless body was discovered by her daughter, who had grown increasingly concerned after several unanswered phone calls throughout the day.
Upon visiting her mother’s home, she was met with a grisly scene: her mother lying in a pool of blood on the bed, with deep wounds to her neck and multiple stab injuries to her chest, arms, and back.
Following the harrowing discovery, investigators launched a high-stakes manhunt for the killer. Forensic evidence eventually led detectives to Sailo village in Kipkelion East Sub-County, where 28-year-old Wesley Cheruiyot Koech was found hiding and subsequently arrested.
Upon interrogation, Koech led officers to his home, where key pieces of evidence were recovered. Among the items seized were a bloodstained knife believed to be the murder weapon, the deceased’s mobile phone, and a ring belonging to Rutto. Disturbingly, the phone contained photos allegedly taken by the suspect of the victim’s body following the attack.
Investigations have revealed that the motive behind the heinous act may have stemmed from a long-standing grudge. Koech is reported to have been in a romantic relationship with Rutto until 2016, when she ended the affair and moved on with another man. Sources say the suspect felt betrayed and financially used during their relationship.
Koech is currently in police custody as detectives complete their investigations. He is expected to be arraigned in court once the file is finalized.
Police have commended the swift efforts of the Bomet Central investigative team and assured the public of their continued commitment to justice.
