Police have arrested a woman from Muruka village in Murang’a for allegedly poisoning her 4-year-old child.
According to Kandara sub-county Police Commander Michael Mwaura, the woman is suspected of having killed her child to be free to travel to a Middle East country where she had secured a job as a househelp.
The police report disclosed that the woman might have committed the heinous crime between November 6 and 7 after her husband denied being left behind to take care of the child.
“She approached her husband with the news and requested that he be left taking care of the child but he refused prompting the woman to resort to extreme measures,” the police statement said.
In what looks like a calculated move, the police said that the mother of one had found work in Saudi Arabia through the help of an agent and was expected to travel on November 16.
The police report narrated that the woman bought yoghurt for the child and fed it to the 4-year-old, who died a few minutes after severe vomits.
“The yoghurt container emitted a smell suspected to be of a pesticide,” the report said.
According to Nation.Africa, police collected a container of a pesticide half used from the couple’s house.
The smell of the pesticide seized by the police matched the smell of the yoghurt container the suspect used to feed the child.
The police are holding the woman to assist in preliminary investigations as they await a postmortem report to ascertain the cause of the child’s death.
The outcome of the postmortem report will inform the next cause of action against the woman.
The Murang’a police boss said the investigations are meant to seal loopholes since the suspect could blame the seller or the yoghurt processor.
