Shirleen Saiton Saipiri went viral after her teacher, Joyce Sempela Malit, was pictured sewing her torn uniform on opening day.
Sempela explained that she chose to sew the girl’s outfit because her home is far and she couldn’t send her away half naked.
“I decided to sew her dress; I always carry a needle and thread around so I closed the door and covered her with my leso, then started mending her dress,” she said.
Many Kenyans were moved by the story as well-wishers stepped in to help the needy pupil.
Philanthropist and former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has since cleared her school fees.
As promised earlier today, I’m happy to report that I contacted the administration of Siyiape Primary School, Narok County, in regards to the pupil who was wearing a torn dress in school.
This morning, I cleared her school fees arrears and also managed to have her admitted in boarding at the school since she was struggling to walk everyday for 6 kms from school to her grandmother’s home.
I’ve also catered for her pocket money and shopping that will last her until end of this year. My special thanks go to Sammy Ondimu for his quick intervention and also teacher Joyce, who was sewing the pupil’s torn uniform.”

According to reports, the eight-year-old from Narok North sub-county is being raised by her grandmother as her parents are nomads who live and operate in the most interior parts of the county.
Now that the student appears to be in order, attention is turning to the compassionate teacher who made it all possible.
Expeditions Maasai offers teacher Joyce Sempela fully-paid vacation
The CEO of Expeditions Maasai Safaris, Pancras Karema, has said that he is looking to present the teacher.
He said that deeds of compassion like those performed by Madam Sempela have a significant impact on a child’s life.
“I believe it’s important to recognise and reward good deeds. That’s why I’m asking for your help in locating Madam Joyce,” he said.
The company wants to show its appreciation for the instructor, the CEO said, by giving her a free holiday as part of a well-deserved break.
He continued by saying that it is wise for the people to band together and express gratitude for her selflessness and devotion to her students.
