Former CS Margaret Nyambura rejects Ruto’s ambassadorial job offer

"To save precious time of the committee, this letter serves as notice that I will not attend."

Former ICT Cabinet Secretary Margaret Nyambura has officially declined her nomination as Kenya’s ambassador to Ghana, citing personal reasons for her decision.

In a letter addressed to the National Assembly’s Defense and Foreign Relations Committee, Nyambura informed the committee of her inability to attend the approval hearings, which are chaired by Belgut MP Nelson Koech.

“I wish to inform you that I will not appear occasioned by personal and compelling reasons,” Nyambura wrote in the letter submitted through the Clerk of the National Assembly.

She added, “To save precious time of the committee, this letter serves as notice that I will not attend.”

MP Nelson Koech expressed disappointment, noting that this is the second time a nominee has declined the ambassadorial position in Ghana.

Recurring Pattern of Declinations

Last year, former West Mugirango MP Vincent Mogaka Kemosi similarly turned down his nomination as Kenya’s High Representative to Accra, Ghana.

Nyambura, who served as the ICT Cabinet Secretary for only four months, was dropped from the cabinet in recent reshuffles by President William Ruto.

She was subsequently nominated on December 24, 2024, for the Ghanaian ambassadorship role.

Other Diplomatic Appointments

President Ruto’s recent round of diplomatic appointments included notable nominations such as Ababu Namwamba for the United Nations Office in Nairobi, Andrew Karanja for Brazil, and Noor Gabow for Haiti.

Nyambura’s decision to decline the Ghanaian appointment raises questions about the position’s challenges and underscores a growing pattern of nominees rejecting the role.
