Controversial preacher and founder of Neno Evangelism Centre, Pastor James Ng’ang’a, has once again sparked national debate after reuniting with a congregant he previously slapped during a church service—an incident that once went viral and drew widespread condemnation.
In his trademark unapologetic style, the outspoken pastor turned what many considered a scandal into what he described as a moment of divine reconciliation.
During a recent church gathering, Ng’ang’a publicly addressed the slap for the first time, calling the same man forward before a hushed congregation.
Ng’ang’a, ever the provocateur, turned to the man and asked:
“Uko tayari kupigwa kofi tena?”
He replied:
“Hakuna shida. Niko tayari kwa kofi lingine. Acha nipigwe kofi na injili iendelee. Niko tayari kuwa mfano kwa wengine. Huwezi kuwa na mapepo ndani yako na kuwa na amani. Hilo lilikuwa kofi la baraka.”
The “Slap Testimony”
The man, whose identity remains undisclosed, went on to give a bizarre yet passionate testimony. He described years of spiritual torment, including nightmares and visions of a “spiritual wife,” despite extended periods of prayer and fasting in secluded places.
According to him, the slap marked a turning point in his life.
“Hapo awali ulikuwa umenipiga kofi. Ulinipiga kofi, lakini hiyo haikusambaa. Umenipiga kofi mara mbili. Ilikuwa nzuri sana. Ulinipiga kofi na nikaanguka – nilijisikia vizuri,” he said, drawing gasps and nervous laughter from the audience, and even a stunned look from Pastor Ng’ang’a himself.
Outrage and Debate
While the congregant seemed grateful—almost enthusiastic—about the slaps, the incident has reignited serious debate about the boundaries of spiritual leadership, religious fanaticism, and human rights in Kenya.
Social media users have been vocal, with many accusing Pastor Ng’ang’a of masking abuse under the guise of deliverance. Others, however, defended the preacher, claiming the man’s willingness to return proves the authenticity of his spiritual experience.
Legal experts and human rights organizations have chimed in, calling for more accountability in places of worship. Some have questioned why such behavior—amounting to physical assault—continues to go unchallenged simply because it happens within a religious setting.
Ng’ang’a Unbothered
Despite the backlash, Pastor Ng’ang’a appeared unshaken. Known for his bold sermons and viral outbursts, he has built a reputation as one of Kenya’s most controversial religious figures—one who often blurs the line between theatrical preaching and confrontation.
Whether the slap was a divine act or a gross abuse of spiritual authority, one thing is clear: Pastor Ng’ang’a knows how to keep the country talking.
