Pipeline neighborhoods in Nairobi’s Embakasi South is both enticing and dangerous.
Rows upon rows of towering residential blocks, masses of uncollected waste, and gushing sewage separate the two locations.
The Nairobi River’s miasma welcomes visitors to this region of Nairobi.
Kware and Pipeline are nothing more than concrete slums. There is usually a flurry of activity along the tiny streets, which have been further encroached upon by vendors, leaving walkers and automobiles scrambling for the few remaining spaces.
Pedestrians must learn to move quickly on one side of the road, taking care not to tread on the plates and cups exhibited by merchants and keeping a safe distance from automobiles.
Residents dread the rainy season because it makes the area impassable owing to mud and pools of water that collect on any open place.
The two neighborhoods are a haven for unscrupulous landlords who appear to be exempt from Nairobi City County’s housing and urban planning rules.
The majority of the housing units are bedsitters and single rooms, with a few one-bedroom flats thrown in for good measure.
Some of the residences are daycare centers from dawn to dusk and then become family dwellings at night. Others are back door clinics.
