Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi has been arrested and taken into custody by detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), just hours after a dramatic early morning raid on his home and county offices.
Governor Wamatangi was apprehended in connection with an ongoing investigation into the alleged embezzlement of public funds and conflict of interest in the Kiambu County administration. The raid, conducted at dawn on Monday, also targeted the homes and offices of nine other senior county officials, all suspected to be part of a widening corruption scandal that has rocked the county.
Sources close to the investigation revealed that the officials are believed to have siphoned millions from county coffers through irregular procurement deals, ghost projects, and abuse of office.
The Governor was later seen being escorted into the EACC headquarters in Nairobi, under heavy security. The commission is expected to issue an official statement later today to clarify the charges and provide details of the evidence gathered during the raid.
This arrest marks a significant escalation in the anti-corruption watchdog’s response to growing public outcry over alleged mismanagement in Kiambu County. Pressure has been mounting on the EACC in recent months to take swift and decisive action, with both residents and civil society groups calling for accountability.
This is not the first time Kiambu County has found itself in the eye of a graft storm. The county previously made headlines under former Governor Ferdinand Waititu, who is currently serving time after being convicted in a multi-million-shilling corruption case.
The back-to-back scandals have left many questioning the integrity of Kiambu’s leadership and the effectiveness of oversight mechanisms within county governments.
Kenyans are now waiting keenly for the EACC’s next move, with many hoping that this signals a renewed commitment to fighting corruption at both national and county levels.
