Kenyans react after Eliud Kipchoge fails to congratulate Kevin Kiptum

Kenyans are debating Eliud Kipchoge’s silence after Kevin Kiptum shattered his marathon record.

On Sunday, October 8, the 23-year-old astonished many by breaking Kipchoge’s world record with a timing of 2:00:35.

Kiptum had only run three marathons before this achievement.

He finished the Chicago Marathon 34 seconds faster than Kipchoge, who established the previous record at the Berlin Marathon in 2022.

Kiptum’s achievement demonstrated that running a marathon in under two hours is doable.

Because of the race conditions, including rotating pacemakers, Kipchoge’s time of 1:59 in the 2019 Ineos Challenge was not an official record.

Kipchoge has yet to issue a statement following Kiptum’s run, which several Kenyans on Twitter believe unsportsmanlike.

Here are some of the rections:

@Makiadi_: 24 hours later, the former record holder Eliud Kipchoge has not yet congratulated Kelvin Kiptum for breaking the Marathon World Record! But nikiongea mtasema niko na issues. Acha Mungu aamue hii kesi.

@its_fanuel: 54 hours later, Eliud Kipchoge hasn’t congratulated Kelvin Kiptum. So Kiptum was limited to break his record?

@BuliloS: 🤣🤣🤣jomba bana,Eliud kumbe ako hivyo vile niliskia ni jamaa wa chuki na watu mbaya sana, especially kule ocha ametoka…naskia watu huko wanamlia kama kitu ingine…(no man is limited..)😁😁😁

Kigen: I have been a huge fan of Eliud since 2004. It’s unsportsmanlike to ignore Kelvin’s performance.”

Stycie Waweru: You don’t have to make a post to congratulate someone. You can call him or her and achieve the same objective.”

Sortum Kipkemoi: I don’t think anyone owns other people’s success or keys to success. Lack of congratulations or with congratulations doesn’t add or subtract anything.”

Cheruiyot Cheres: It is painful, but Kipchoge is a good man. From my point of view, it’s like he did not believe what Kiptum did.”

Chepng’otie Chepng’otie: Silence doesn’t mean anything.”

Mum Nicole: “Both are great. I celebrate them. I am happy that someone is coming into the arena now that Kipchoge is nearly exiting the sport.”
