Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC (KenGen) Managing Director and CEO, Eng. Peter Njenga, has been appointed as Co-Chair of the Business 20 (B20) Task Force on Energy Mix and Just Transition under South Africa’s G20 presidency in 2025.
This prestigious appointment places Eng. Njenga at the forefront of global discussions on sustainable energy, where he will collaborate with industry leaders, policymakers, and executives to shape strategies for transitioning to cleaner energy sources while ensuring economic and social equity.
The B20 is the official business engagement group of the G20, representing the private sector’s voice in shaping international economic and policy decisions.
Kenya’s Influence in Global Energy Transition

Speaking on his appointment, Eng. Njenga described it as a historic moment for Kenya and Africa.
“This appointment underscores Kenya’s growing influence in the global green energy transition. I am truly humbled to be the first Kenyan to hold this prestigious role, which gives us an opportunity to shape energy policies on a global scale,” he said.
Kenya is widely recognized as a renewable energy powerhouse, deriving over 90% of its electricity from clean sources. KenGen, the country’s leading energy generator, has been a pioneer in Africa’s clean energy revolution, with an installed capacity of 1,786MW, including 754MW of geothermal power—making it Africa’s top producer of geothermal energy.
Under Eng. Njenga’s leadership, KenGen has expanded its renewable energy portfolio while positioning itself as a key player in regional and global energy security discussions.
His new role within the B20 Task Force on Energy Mix & Just Transition is expected to further elevate KenGen’s standing on the international stage.

What the Appointment Means for Africa
Eng. Njenga’s appointment signals a deliberate effort to integrate Africa’s priorities into the global energy dialogue, positioning Kenya—and the continent—as a leader in renewable energy innovation and policy advocacy.
“This is a defining moment, not just for KenGen and Kenya, but for the entire African continent. It reflects the recognition of our leadership in renewable energy and our commitment to a just and sustainable energy transition. As we engage with global stakeholders, my priority will be to ensure that Africa’s unique challenges and opportunities are at the heart of global energy policy discussions,” he added.
The B20 Task Force on Energy Mix & Just Transition will engage with governments, financial institutions, and private sector leaders to develop recommendations on clean energy adoption, energy security, and climate resilience. These policy positions will be presented at the B20 Summit and directly influencing the G20 Leaders’ Summit in South Africa later in the year.
KenGen’s Role in the Global Energy Transition
Eng. Njenga’s participation in the B20 Task Force strengthens Africa’s voice in global climate and energy discussions, ensuring that the continent’s energy transition is supported by policies that:
- Promote investment in green technologies.
- Encourage equitable financing mechanisms.
- Foster sustainable economic growth through clean energy.
His expertise is particularly valuable at a time when the world is grappling with balancing renewable energy adoption with economic development and energy access. KenGen, under his leadership, continues to expand its geothermal, wind, and solar energy investments, reinforcing its status as a leader in Africa’s clean energy transition.
This milestone reaffirms KenGen’s commitment to driving Kenya’s clean energy ambitions while playing an influential role in shaping global energy policy. As the energy transition accelerates worldwide, KenGen’s expertise and leadership will remain instrumental in defining a sustainable energy future for Kenya, Africa, and beyond.
