A Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldier was killed in a violent altercation at Mtaragon trading centre in Kipkelion West constituency, Kericho County, sparking chaos and retaliatory attacks in the village.
According to Kericho County police boss James Ngetich, the soldier was at a local establishment when he got into an argument with a group of young men. The dispute quickly escalated into a physical fight, leaving him with serious injuries.
Despite efforts by bystanders to intervene and rush him to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries before receiving medical attention. Police confirmed that he was off duty at the time of the incident.
Villagers Seek Revenge, Set Homes and Businesses on Fire
News of the soldier’s death spread rapidly, leading to a violent retaliation by enraged villagers on Sunday morning.
Unable to locate the suspected attackers, they turned their fury on their homes and businesses, setting several structures ablaze.
Security forces were swiftly deployed to restore calm, but the damage had already been done. Ng’etich confirmed that property of unknown value was destroyed in the chaos.
Police Call for Calm Amid Rising Tensions
Authorities have urged residents not to take matters into their own hands, emphasizing that police are actively investigating the attack and working to track down the suspects.
“Tension remains high in the area, but we have increased security presence to prevent further violence,” Ng’etich stated.
The soldier’s body has been moved to the local mortuary for an autopsy as investigations continue.
Mob Justice on the Rise
The incident adds to the growing concern over cases of mob justice in Kenya, with authorities warning against extrajudicial retaliation.
Police have reiterated that suspects should be handed over to law enforcement rather than being subjected to vigilante justice, as some victims may be falsely accused.
Security forces remain on high alert in the area to prevent further retaliatory attacks.
