Kayole Residents Stage Demonstrations After Police Kill another Man for Breaking Curfew Rules
Residents of Kayole, Nairobi, staged protests in the area after police officers allegedly killed a man for flouting Covid-19 safety protocols.
The irate residents engaged police officer in running battles on Thursday, August 19, 2021, sealing off major roads leading in and out of the estate during the protest.
The man, John Kiiru, 38, was on board a boda boda headed home when they were intercepted at Tushauriane Stage by officers enforcing the dusk to dawn curfew.
The rider managed to escape, but Kiiru while attempting to flee on foot was brutally beaten up by the officers.
Before he died, he managed to call his wife Esther Wanjiru, informing her that he had been roughed up by police officers.
Kiiru was left lying on the ground and succumbed to his injuries. His body was still at the scene of the incident on Thursday morning.
Irate Kayole residents staged demonstrations following the incident, demanding that action be taken against the officers responsible for the 38-year-old’s death.
Police officers were repelled by the residents, who threw stones and lit fires along the roads, preventing the authorities from collecting the deceased’s body.
The incident happens at a time when the country has been marred by police killings. It is barely a week since two brothers were laid to rest in Kianjokoma, Embu County after they were beaten to death by police officers.
Yesterday, another man succumbed in Maseno, Kisumu County, after he was clobbered by police officers for failing to wear a face mask.
