Former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has vowed to challenge her impeachment in the highest court, declaring her removal a grave injustice orchestrated by political forces.
She decried what she termed as a biased system, accusing the national government, male chauvinists, and political competitors of orchestrating her downfall.
Mwangaza, who formally lost her seat after the High Court upheld the Senate’s impeachment resolution, maintained that she was a victim of political machinations.
She pointed fingers at powerful individuals who allegedly interfered with the judiciary and national government to ensure her ouster.
“Instead of upholding the rule of law, the government actively influenced the outcome, silencing the voices of Meru residents who elected me. Even the courts, which should have been my refuge, were manipulated to block my access to justice,” she stated.
Her impeachment was spearheaded by Ms. Zipporah Kinya, a UDA-nominated MCA, who moved the motion that led to her removal.
This was the second attempt to oust her, following a similar motion in 2023 by then-Majority Leader Evans Mawira, who was later deposed after switching allegiance to Mwangaza’s camp.
Following her removal, Mwangaza claimed that those behind the impeachment celebrated openly, with some even thanking the country’s top leadership for facilitating the process.
She asserted that her removal was not just an attack on her as a leader but a direct blow to democracy, gender equality, and the rights of women in leadership.
A Political Comeback in the Making
Despite her ouster, Mwangaza remains defiant, promising a political resurgence in Meru. She announced plans to form a political party ahead of the 2027 elections, vowing to return stronger.
“My removal has taught me that it is not wise to vie as an independent candidate. Moving forward, I will hold political rallies to identify potential leaders and solidify my support base for 2027. My charity initiatives will also continue,” she declared.
The former governor, who is currently appealing her impeachment, also pledged to keep the county government in check, stating that she will not allow the interests of Meru residents to be undermined.
“I call on all Kenyans, civil society organizations, and the international community to stand with me in condemning this blatant abuse of power and to demand accountability,” she appealed.
With her legal battle ongoing and political activities intensifying, Mwangaza’s next moves will be closely watched as she fights to reclaim her political ground in Meru County.
