Azimio la Umoja In the fiercely contested battle for State House, Raila Odinga, one of Kenya’s presidential hopefuls, was soundly defeated.
William Ruto, Raila’s bitter political adversary, stunned him by winning with 7,176,141 votes, or 50.49 percent of the total votes cast, to be proclaimed the winner.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati announced the results on Monday, August 15. The former premier received 6,942,930 votes, placing him in second place.
Following the declaration, Kenyans re-posted Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s caution about Raila’s presidency without him on social media.
The ODM leader will lose the top position, Kalonzo had warned, if he didn’t choose him as his running mate.
“People know that when Raila takes the Wiper team on board, he will be the next President of Kenya. But there is a problem when Raila leaves Kalonzo,” said Kalonzo.
The Azimio team was interviewing potential running mates at the time, and Kalonzo was rallying support for his own candidacy.
Martha Karua, the leader of the Narc-Kenya, Peter Munya, Hassan Joho, Sabina Chege, and Wycliffe Oparanya were among the other candidates that were under consideration.
The team ultimately decided on Karua, and Kalonzo was given the job of chief minister as a result.
