The four commissioners, Juliana Cherera, Justus Nyang’aya, Irene Masit, and Francis Wanderi, who disowned Chebukati’s presidential results have come out to defend their move.
In a media briefing, Juliana Cherera, the vice chair of IEBC and leader of the other three commissioners, explained that Chebukati’s results were unconstitutional because he acted selfishly on his own.
She insisted that the commission was not involved in the processing of the final tallying and Chebukati had failed to address some of the issues raised by political parties.
She explained that the results did not add up because they did not make sense mathematically. According to her, the percentages of votes awarded to each candidate add up to 101%, contrary to the required100%. She explained that the aggregation era would make a difference in the results.
She went on to argue that Chebukati did not provide the total number of valid votes cast and rejected votes, affecting the credibility of the results.
The commission also accused Chebukati of not allowing transparency since he had stopped the results from being shared on the public portal.
Yesterday, the four commissioners shocked the nations when they held a press briefing at Serena Hotel to distance themselves from the presidential results, which Chebukati was to announce.
They accused the final process of tallying as opaque.
Nonetheless, the results were announced and William Ruto was pronounced the president-elect.
