Juja Member of Parliament George Koimburi is reportedly being held at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters on Kiambu Road, sparking political tension and speculation over the circumstances of his detention.
The news first broke on Tuesday morning when Kiambu County Senator Karungo Wa Thang’wa took to social media, writing, “DCI at it again. They have arrested Juja MP George Koimburi. Reason? They are yet to say!”
Arrest Details
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Senator Thang’wa confirmed that Koimburi was intercepted by DCI detectives while on his way to Parliament. According to Thang’wa, the MP was led to the Kiambu Road headquarters without being informed of the reasons for his detention.
“I received a phone call from Koimburi as he was being taken to the DCI headquarters. He was not told why he was being arrested, which raises concerns whether this is an arrest or an abduction,” Thang’wa stated.
Political Undercurrents
Koimburi and Thang’wa are known allies of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and have been vocal in their criticism of certain government policies. Their affiliation with Gachagua has led to speculation that Koimburi’s arrest may be politically motivated.
City attorney Ndegwa Njiru, who confirmed he was representing the MP, claimed that Koimburi was being detained over remarks he made during the weekend about President William Ruto’s administration.
“I am at the DCI headquarters representing Hon. Koimburi, who has been arrested for stating the obvious—that Ksh13 billion was spent on Raila’s AUC botched mission. What’s wrong with calling him to account? Is it that the truth hurts?” Njiru questioned.
Controversial Statements
During a church service over the weekend, Koimburi accused President Ruto’s administration of misusing public funds to lobby for former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s unsuccessful bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship.
“Kenyans are worried after witnessing public funds being poorly utilised to bribe individuals so that they can vote in Raila Amollo Odinga as the new chairman for AU in Addis Ababa. It is such a shame,” Koimburi stated.
His remarks have since gained traction, with some political analysts suggesting that the arrest could be an attempt to silence dissenting voices within the government’s ranks.
Government’s Response
As of Tuesday afternoon, the government had yet to issue an official statement regarding Koimburi’s detention. Attempts to reach DCI officials for a comment were unsuccessful.
Meanwhile, supporters of the Juja MP have called for his immediate release, arguing that his arrest is an attack on free speech and political expression. Political analysts believe this development could further strain relations between Deputy President Gachagua’s camp and President Ruto’s administration.
With tensions rising, all eyes remain on the DCI as Kenyans await further clarity on the charges—if any—that Koimburi may be facing.
