Isaiah Ngetich: Man with stage 4 cancer excited after being freed from prison to reunite with family

A man who was imprisoned is overjoyed after a court declared him free on medical grounds.

The defendant was sentenced to three years in prison for the offense of destroying farmed crops.

The 54-year-old Kericho GK Medium Prison convict, on the other hand, was released on medical grounds.

Justice Joseph Sergon of the Kericho High Court stated there was no compelling reason to continue keeping Isaiah Tuwei Ngetich, who was diagnosed with stage 4 throat cancer earlier this year.

Labantine Makoyamo, the prison’s Officer-in-Charge Senior Superintendent of Prisons (SSP), said Ngetich had served a year and two months of his sentence.

Ngetich, a father of two, was transferred to the jail institution in March following his conviction.

According to Makomayo, the prison asked the Kericho Law Court to release Ngetich on medical grounds.

Ngetich complained of trouble when swallowing food late last year and was transported to Kericho County Referral Hospital.

According to Kenya News Agency, he was later diagnosed with the disease at the medical institution.

“When he came to the prison, he was not sick, but he later developed pain while swallowing food, thus prompting prison authorities to immediately take him to the referral hospital for diagnosis and treatment,” Makomayo explained.

Ngetich couldn’t contain his joy at the prospect of reuniting with his loved ones back home.

He expressed his delight at coming home, where he will be able to enjoy the comfort of his family members while continuing to receive therapy from his home in Soin/Sigowet Sub-county.

“I thank God that I am finally returning home to be with my family after staying in jail for one year and two months. My brothers have been visiting me, and I cannot wait to be reunited with them,” said Ngetich.
