How to successfully apply for Government Tenders online

The government, through the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA), provides an online portal for anyone seeking government tenders and contracts.

It is important to note that according to the law, women, youth and persons with disabilities have a reservation of 30% of all Government Procurement opportunities being implemented under the Access to Government Procurement Opportunities (AGPO) program.

How does one get access to the AGPO program?

1. You need to register a business enterprise at the Attorney General’s Office in the form of a sole proprietorship business, partnership business or a limited company.

2. If business is a partnership, you will need to get a partnership deed from a lawyer, and in the case of a limited company, a CR12 from the registrar of Companies (system generated soft copy).

3. Acquire a PIN and tax compliance/ tax exemption certificate from the Kenya Revenue Authority website.

4. Get all required certifications from professional bodies and authorities such as National Construction Authority, Insurance Regulatory Authority, the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya, Law Society of Kenya, and all other authorised bodies.

5. You will need to open a bank account for the business and acquire a bank reference from the bank.

6. Log on to the AGPO website, http://agpo.go.ke, and register online, or visit your nearest Huduma Centre for assistance.

Note that in the case of an enterprise owned by youth, women or persons with disabilities, to benefit from preference and reservations schemes, it will need to be duly registered with the relevant government body, with at least seventy percent membership of youth, women or persons with disabilities.
