A candidate sitting this year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination died on Tuesday night in Homa Bay County after a long battle with sickle cell anaemia.
Belinda Atieno, 20, who was a student at Nyawita Secondary School in Rangwe Sub-county, died at Matata Hospital in Oyugis Town where she had been rushed for specialised treatment.
According to the school principal, Mr. George Olueya, the girl’s anaemic condition worsened at the beginning of this term which caused her to be on and off school.
The principal said Belinda had sat for all the KCSE exams which kicked off but on Tuesday morning, her condition deteriorated.
She was rushed to Nyawita Dispensary where she undertook the day’s exams.
The Form Four student was later transferred to Asumbi Mission Hospital where she was treated and taken back Nyawita Dispensary.
Later that night, Belinda was transferred to Matata Hospital for specialised treatment but pronounced dead on arrival.
Rangwe Sub-county Police Commander Jane Sang confirmed the incident saying the body of the deceased has been moved to Matata Hospital morgue.
