Authorities in Kampala are intensifying investigations into a high-profile robbery involving over USh1 billion (KSh35 million), reportedly orchestrated by two security guards entrusted with transporting the money in a bullion van.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the robbery took place on November 19, 2024, while the cash was being transported from Lubowa to Nakasero.
Preliminary findings indicate that the two guards, employed by the security firm G4S, allegedly conspired to steal the money from the bullion van, which bore registration number UAJ 199T.
Vehicle and Rifles Abandoned
The suspects reportedly abandoned the vehicle in Nabunya, Rubaga Division, Kampala. Upon recovery, police discovered two rifles left inside the van, raising further concerns about the apparent betrayal by those tasked with protecting the cash.
“The stolen cash amounted to USh1.06 billion, according to a report filed by the security company,” ASP Owoyesigyire confirmed on Monday.
Arrest and Recovery of Part of the Money
Swift action by the police led to the arrest of one of the suspects, identified as Ambrose Richard Otim, in Kwania District. During his apprehension, officers recovered USh117 million, suspected to be a portion of the stolen money. The recovered cash is currently being held as evidence while investigations continue.
Commitment to Justice
ASP Owoyesigyire assured the public that significant efforts are being made to recover the remaining funds and bring all those involved to justice. “We are committed to ensuring that the stolen money is fully recovered and all individuals responsible for this crime face the law,” he said.
Ongoing Investigations
Police have intensified their efforts, including tracking down potential accomplices and piecing together the suspects’ movements leading up to and following the heist. Authorities believe more arrests are imminent as they widen their net in pursuit of all those linked to the case.
The robbery has highlighted vulnerabilities in the transportation of large sums of money, with calls emerging for enhanced security measures and oversight to prevent similar incidents in the future.
As investigations progress, police have promised to provide updates to keep the public informed and to maintain confidence in law enforcement efforts to resolve the case.
