The Freemasons Society has denied claims that it owes Sh19 million in unpaid land rates to the Nairobi County Government.
Grand Master Mason William McGhee addressed the matter following a dramatic raid by county officials at the Freemasons Hall on Nyerere Road, stating that the property in question is held in trust and that the issue is currently being addressed through dialogue with the county.
“The property is held in trust, and we are actively engaging with Nairobi County to resolve any misunderstanding,” McGhee said.
The statement comes just days after Health CEC Susan Silantoi, accompanied by revenue officers, led a clampdown on the historic building as part of a citywide crackdown on land rate defaulters.
The county claims the Freemasons Hall is among several high-value properties owing millions in land rates, a part of their aggressive push to recover over Sh10 billion in unpaid dues.
Despite the public attention, the Freemason leadership insists that the situation is being handled amicably and legally, and has urged the public to avoid speculation.
