Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson Wafula Chebukati has passed away.
Chebukati died on the night of Thursday, February 20, while receiving treatment at a Nairobi hospital, where he had been admitted for nearly a week and placed in the Intensive Care Unit.
Life and Career
Born in Bungoma County, Chebukati was a distinguished lawyer and public servant. He pursued his law degree at the University of Nairobi before advancing his legal career as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya. His expertise in governance and electoral law saw him rise to prominence in Kenya’s political and legal landscape.
In January 2017, Chebukati was appointed as the chairperson of the IEBC, a position he held until January 17, 2023. During his tenure, he oversaw the 2017 and 2022 general elections, navigating complex political dynamics and legal challenges.
His leadership was both praised and criticized, particularly during the 2017 election annulment by the Supreme Court and the 2022 presidential election, where he stood firm on his decisions despite internal divisions within the commission.
Legacy and Farewell Message
Reflecting on his service during his farewell address, Chebukati expressed satisfaction with his tenure at the commission.
“I was appointed the chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission on January 18, 2017, for a constitutional term of six years. Yesterday, I completed my term. It has been an honour,” he stated.
“I exit contented that we gave our best to this commission. We navigated and endured storms that threatened its very existence.”
Beyond his role in electoral management, Chebukati was known for his commitment to legal reforms and governance in Kenya. His leadership left a lasting mark on the country’s democratic processes.
He leaves behind a legacy of resilience, integrity, and dedication to public service.
