Kipchoge was born in Kapsisiywa, Nandi County, Kenya on November 5, 1984. In 1999, he attended Kaptel Secondary School but did not run competitively. He used to run two miles (3.2 km) to school every day.
Kipchoge was raised by a single mother and only knew about his father through photographs. He is the youngest of four children.
Career
At the age of 16, he met his trainer Patrick Sang, a former Olympic steeplechase medalist. He won the Kenyan trials for the 2002 IAAF World Cross Country Championships junior race in 2002.
Kipchoge placed fifth in the individual race and was part of the Kenyan youth team that won gold at the World Cross Country Championships in Dublin.
He also won the 5000m race at the Kenyan trial for the 2002 World Junior Athletics Championships, but fell unwell and was unable to compete. Eliud won the junior race at the 2003 IAAF World Cross Country Championships.
At the 2003 Bislett Games, he set a world junior record in the 5000 m with a time of 12:52.61 minutes. This was the world and African junior mark until Hagos Gebrhiwet of Ethiopia improved it to 12:47.53 minutes in 2012.
Kipchoge won gold in the 5000 m final at the 2003 World Championships, outrunning both future world record holder Kenenisa Bekele and runner-up Hicham El Guerrouj (world record holder in the 1500 metres and mile) by four hundredths of a second (12:52.79 vs. 12:52.83).
Kipchoge won the 2018 London Marathon, beating off Mo Farah, Kenenisa Bekele, and reigning champion Daniel Wanjiru.
