The funeral service of Gerald Mwangi, also known as Makanga Bae, took a dramatic turn on October 23, 2024, as his family accused organizers of mismanaging funds meant for his send-off.
Mwangi, who passed away after a tragic road accident on October 10, was being laid to rest, but financial mishandling overshadowed the solemn event.
A family member publicly voiced their frustrations, saying,
“Watu hawa wote wametukosea kama family hatukutaka kuzika ndugu yetu vile munamuona yuko hapo Gerald vile amewekwa hapo si sawa,”
Adding:
“Gerald sisi tulitaka tumsend off kiheshima lakini kuna maneno ya group marafiki wa Gerald wamekuja kuchangia… kulikuwa kukae kama paradise sababu Gerald hii ndio siku yake ya mwisho hapa duniani,”
They expressed disappointment that contributions made by Gerald’s friends were not reflected in the funeral arrangements, despite promises made during planning.
According to the family, a key organizer named Muturi failed to provide essential support.
They stated, “Muturi alisema alinunua maji na alinunua chakula, siku ya Leo apa hakuna maji, hakuna chakula mambo yote imefanywa na Muturi na Kajuju na Teddy,”
The family also revealed the emotional toll on Gerald’s mother, who had considered taking her life due to the internal conflicts within the funeral group. Despite the turmoil, Mwangi was laid to rest by the end of the day.
He was buried at his home in Muthure, located between Gitaru and Wangige.
Makanga Bae’s death
Mwangi tragically passed away on the night of Thursday, October 10, due to injuries sustained in a fatal accident.
Following the incident, his family had made a public appeal for blood in an effort to save him. Unfortunately, Mwangi succumbed to his injuries.
In honour of his memory, a candle-lighting ceremony will be held on Tuesday, 22nd October 2024, at the Super Metro Main Stage in Nairobi’s CBD.
Super Metro, where Makanga Bae worked, had previously paid tribute to him with a heartfelt statement:
“In loving memory of Mwas, beloved child, husband, dad, and friend. All forms of loss are heartbreaking, but letting go is a profound meaning of loss itself. Peace will come from the memories of his love and affection that comfort you today and tomorrow.”
The accident that claimed Mwangi’s life occurred when he was reportedly ejected from a moving vehicle.
According to an account shared by a colleague named Harmony, “They were hit from behind, and there was a car that collided with them. They were leaving one of the stages along the highway when the accident happened. He was at the door and was thrown out upon impact.”
