Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has issued a stern warning to newly appointed Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku, accusing him of inciting public dissatisfaction over stalled government projects.
The public reprimand occurred during a high-level meeting with over 5,000 elders from Embu County, an event jointly hosted by the two leaders.
Tensions arose when CS Ruku passionately urged the deputy president to fast-track the tarmacking of roads in Siakago Constituency, a request he made on behalf of the local elders. While the plea was meant to highlight the region’s development needs, it seemingly rubbed Kindiki the wrong way.
In a sharp response, the deputy president cautioned Ruku against using his new ministerial role to criticize the government or stir public discontent.
He emphasized the importance of unity and coordination within government ranks, especially at a time when the administration is focused on delivering its development agenda.
The incident has sparked mixed reactions, with some lauding Kindiki’s firm leadership, while others viewed Ruku’s comments as a legitimate expression of grassroots concerns.
“My younger brother Ruku, that flag is not just a piece of cloth—it’s a symbol of honour. Respect it and represent the government,” Kindiki said.
“The president has entrusted you, the elders have blessed you, and yet you come here inciting the public about projects that are yet to be completed. Instead of going back to Nairobi to push your fellow Cabinet ministers and the president to act, you come here to complain like an ordinary citizen?” he posed.
Kindiki insisted that as a Cabinet secretary, Ruku’s role is to help citizens understand the progress of government projects and assist in resolving bottlenecks—not to stir public discontent.
“You are no longer an MP. You are a minister now. You can’t come here to lament and incite people. If you can’t defend the government and represent your people, then you’re in the wrong place,” Kindiki added.
CS Ruku, who was appointed just weeks ago following the dismissal of Justin Muturi, finds himself in the spotlight as he navigates the challenges of his new role.
Muturi, the former CS, has since aligned himself with the opposition, led by impeached deputy president Rigathi Gachagua.
The incident highlights emerging tensions within President William Ruto’s administration as newly appointed leaders balance political expectations with public service delivery.
