Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Mombasa have dismissed widely circulated online claims alleging that two suspects arrested in the county had broken into the Mombasa State House and slept there.
“Contrary to fake news doing rounds in the online space, two suspects were arrested on November 11, 2024, by the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) of Central Police Station Mombasa, for the offence of handling suspected stolen property,” the DCI clarified in a statement.
Earlier, social media was abuzz with photos of the suspects, accompanied by sensational claims that they had gained entry to the State House by breaking a window, slept on a bed inside, and were later apprehended.
However, the DCI has refuted these allegations, stating that the suspects were instead linked to stolen goods.
According to the DCI, the two men, aged 20 and 29, were arrested following a tip-off from concerned members of the public.
A subsequent raid by detectives at Rio House on Digo Road led to the recovery of various stolen items, including 51 mobile phones, several laptops, and other electronics valued at over Ksh 1.2 million.
The fake reports also claimed that the suspects were discovered after State House cooks heard snoring sounds coming from the President’s bedroom and alerted security guards.
The DCI has debunked this narrative, confirming that no damage or theft occurred at the State House.
Instead, the suspects were found in possession of the stolen goods during the operation at Rio House. The items recovered included high-value electronics suspected to have been obtained through illegal means.
