A manhunt has been started by police in Nairobi’s Kangemi neighborhood for a suspect who broke into a church and stole more than Sh1.5 million.
The funds had been collected and held overnight on Sunday at the Kangemi’s ACK All Saints Mountain View Church.
The episode shocked both the clergy and the churchgoers to the core. They had donated money for the church’s refurbishment, but it vanished from a drawer by the altar.
It was uncommon for the doors to be open when church elder John Wainanina and treasurer Elizabeth Njoki went to the church to collect the money on Monday, October 10.
They were astonished to see that the Lord’s table, where the bread and wine are consecrated, had been plundered and that the cash kept in a drawer underneath the altar was missing.
The custodian of the church, who has since vanished, was found to be guilty for the loss, according to the police, who said they reported the incident right away to Kangemi police station.
He is accused of having interfered with the electrical system of the church to turn off the installed CCTV system before stealing the offerings from the congregation.
As they attempted to process the loss of the funds intended for the development of the church, shocked flock members who live nearby milled about speaking in low tones.
They expressed their surprise at the trusted church custodian’s depraved actions.
While some were heard calling for the suspect’s pardon should he surface and confess his faults, others were heard cursing the suspect and saying that he would never thrive.
