William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza Alliance has been refused permission to hold their final rally at Nyayo Stadium on August 6.
Raila Odinga, a presidential contender for Azimio la Umoja, had unintentionally made a reservation for the same event at the same time.
The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party Secretary General Veronica Maina was advised by Sports Kenya that the site wouldn’t be open in a letter on Wednesday, July 20.
Sports Kenya Director General Pius Metto claimed in a letter obtained by Mkenya.co.ke that both Kasarani and Nyayo had been scheduled for a concert in support of world peace on the day that the major coalitions are anticipated to hold their last rally.
“We refer to your letter Ref. No. UDA/ADM/08/2022 requesting to use the Nyayo National Stadium on August 6, 2022. We regret to inform you that the facility will not be available for you due to peace concerts scheduled to take place at the Moi International Sports Center-Kasarani and Nyayo National Stadium between 5th-7th August 2022 use. Kindly be informed,” Pius Metto said.
William Ruto’s camp is likely to disagree with Sports Kenya’s decision because they had insisted on using the facility for their final rally before the August election.
Veronica Maina, secretary-general of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), stated on Monday, July 18, “For your information and public record, the Nyayo National Stadium location is already secured and fully booked by United Democratic Alliance (UDA)/Kenya Kwanza Alliance for August 6.”
As previously reported, a confrontation between Ruto and Raila was anticipated before their much anticipated political showdown on August 9.
The Nyayo Stadium was allegedly reserved by the two candidates 48 hours before the election for their big finale rallies.
Raila and his running companion Martha Karua will hold their final rally at the location, according to Junet Mohammed, secretary-general of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition, on Tuesday, July 18.
In a formal news release, Junet stated that “The Azimio campaign team, led by Baba na Martha (Mr Odinga and Ms Karua), will hold its last official campaign meeting in Nairobi on August 6, 2022 at Nyayo Stadium.”
