“Ameomba jameni” Uhuru Warms Hearts After Pardoning Langata Inmate Serving Sentence

President Uhuru Kenyatta has granted clemency to a Lang’ata Women’s Prison inmate who requested a second chance.

Uhuru Kenyatta asked the head of public service, Joseph Kinyua, if the inmate may be pardoned during the President’s Award-Kenya Gold Award ceremonies at State House on Friday, May 13.

Uhuru asked Kinyua whether she might be added on the President’s power of mercy list, a prerogative that allows him to award pardons to repentant criminals.

“Wewe Kinyua, power of mercy, muone kama anaweza kusaidika. Ameomba jameni. (Kinyua you can have her in the power of mercy. She has pleaded). Everybody deserves a second chance.”

Some of those he greeted were inventive in how they transmitted messages, according to the president, who stated that some left handwritten notes in his palm.

Uhuru pledged to read them all and, perhaps, contact those who had left their contact information in the notes.

“You know you guys are very crafty. I am shaking somebody’s hand he has a piece of paper stuck there. The pieces of paper I will read and see how I can respond. Hopefully, you have left your phone numbers or contacts. Hizo tutasoma pole pole (These we’ll read them slowly),” said Uhuru.

A family in Siaya was honored with their hospitality after providing clean tap water to Uhuru in a different instance. The president, who offered a listening ear to the family’s two daughters, heard about their dilemma.

The president promised to support the girls, according to Philip Etale, the media director for the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

“When he went for a photo-op, he asked them how they were doing in school; their answer was, “we are doing fine sir, but school fees is the problem”… the president immediately declared he will pay their school fees until they finish school,” added Etale.
