A section of Kenyan celebrities have been bold enough to come out as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, pansexual and kinks (LGBTQIAPK).
In no particular order, here are some celebrities who openly came out.
Brenda Jons
Brenda Jons made headlines last year, not because of her comedy but after she went live on Instagram to publicly announce that she is gay. At that time, she was accusing Phoina (celebrity makeup artist) of stealing her girlfriend. She is probably the newest member.
“Mimi ni lesbian, nimeshawaambia. Muandike. Here is my girlfriend. Phoina beauty ameniibia dame. Here is my girlfriend. Mscreenshot saa hii. Nimependa msichana guys. I am gay. I am very gay. Acha wapost picha, mimi sijali. Hata wapost wakiwa Mombasa,” Brenda Jons said in an Instagram live.
Anita Nderu
The media personality opened up about being gay after tweeting about discrimination she faced for being LGBTQI+.
Before making the revelation, Anita had been on the front line in defending LGBTQI+ persons, and even termed herself an advocate.
She is now married.
Makena Njeri
The BBC journalist came out as gay while professing love to Marini Naturals CEO Michelle Ntalami.
“Michelle darling I don’t know what I did right in my life to make the universe bring such an angel in to my life, but I’m definite going to spend the rest of my life making you happy as you make me feel,” Makena said in a message to Ntalami.
The former Tahidi High actress was also sexually linked to Waitherero; a former Citizen TV actress.
She also made headlines some time in 2019 after her Mercedes Benz was vandalized by her then girlfriend over cheating.
Chimano
Also known as Austin Chimano, the Sauti Sol member singer made headlines after a group photo showing him paired with a male partner was shared on social media.
The boy band posed for a photo with their partners; Bien Aime with Chiki Kuruka, Savara Mudigi with Yvonne Endo and Polycarp Otieno with his wife Miss Mandy.
Chimano was later trolled over the photo but later shared a fun video with her white partner eliciting more reactions.
Savara came to his rescue urging him to ignore the negative comments.
“Hapana bembeleza mtu bro,” Savara wrote.
Dennis Karuri
Dennis Karuri is a popular make-up artist and content creator with a massive following on social media.
The beauty king from time to time has been speculated to being gay from his dressing to make-up looks but one would mostly say make-up is a form of art not limited to a specific gender.
It is not uncommon to see many newbies looking up to Dennis as he has taken over the female-dominated industry effortlessly whilst attracting A-list celebrities and locals clients.
ED Wainaina
The illustrator and digital artiste came out as gay earlier in 2020 with a statement that sparked hate comments online.
“I’m bisexual so now… Will you accept me? My dp has the colors, I just had to find the right time. Love y’all,” he tweeted.
Noti Flow
The rapper revealed that she is LGBTQI+ confessing that she is into women.
She also opened up on having a threesome with her ex-boyfriend and another lady, further revealing that she once dated Vanessa Chettle.
“My first encounter was with a girl at 19 years. I have dated both women and men. Love comes in many ways and it doesn’t necessarily have to be specifically with a man or a woman. Love does not discriminate. I have loved a man and also loved a woman. My virginity was broken by a girl which was a lovely experience but my first encounter with a man was painful and hard,” she said.
Adding that,
“It took two weeks for me to heal. I find ladies to be more genuine, when a woman tells you they love you they really mean it, they care about you and it’s not all about sex it’s more emotional and supportive. Compared to the men i have dated, love to them is a different definition, it is pegged on sex. When they say they love you but you stop having sex there is no love, the situation changes it’s like love to them means more sex.”
Audrey Mbugua
Formerly Andrew Mbugua, Audrey shocked many after changing his sexuality and his name to Audrey Mbugua.
Audrey who is a transgender is now living as a pre-op woman.
Silas Miami
Silas Miami who is celebrated news anchor Louis Otieno’s son came out as gay after revealing that he is married to Patrick.
He, however, clarified that although they are married, they will maintain an open relationship.
“I met and married someone just under a year ago. He’s got all the things: Kindness, courage, honesty, etc. While all this is all fine and great, that’s not why I married him,” he wrote.
“In fact, neither of us believed in marriage. We still don’t. But after months of us looking at options for what companionship would look like, especially seeing as travel isn’t exactly easy for us, we settled on going for it. We maintain an ethically polyamorous situation because monogamy gives us both migraines,” the post further read.
