The United Democratic Alliance (UDA), a Kwanza-affiliated party, is mourning the loss of one of its candidates in the upcoming August 9 General Election.
Johnson Lokato, the incumbent Lelan ward MCA in West Pokot county, died while being brought to the hospital on Saturday, May 14.
The family told the media that Lokato died after a brief illness.
He was believed to be poorly during the day, but he went to a medical institution in Kapenguria and was treated before being allowed to return home.
“He was sick and went to the hospital in Kapenguria where treated and was allowed to go home, they said it was pneumonia then later in the evening we were told Mzee’s condition has worsened and died just before he was rushed to hospital,” said Lokato’s son-in-law Obadia Lagat
The soft-spoken ward representative later became ill, and just as plans to return him to the hospital were being made, his condition deteriorated, and he died at home.
He is said to have been unwell during the day but he visited a medical facility in Kapenguria where he was treated and allowed to go back home.

The county lawmaker’s body was taken to Crystal Cottage Morgue in Kitale awaiting a postmortem to ascertain the cause of his death. Lokato, a former teacher was nominated to the West Pokot County assembly by ODM in 2013.
He then successfully vied for the same seat in 2017 as an independent candidate. Prior to his death, he was defending his seat now on a UDA ticket. He joins a list of other UDA candidates who died while seeking for posts in the August election
