Prof Kithure Kindiki, a Tharaka Nithi senator, made news in 2013 after his family’s academic history was revealed. The Senator and his three brothers were all professors, it was learned.
He had been a well-known public personality at the time after acting as main lawyer for Deputy President William Ruto in the 2007 post-election violence case at the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Many attributed his appointment to Ruto’s legal team to his extensive international legal experience.
Academic Experience
Kindiki enrolled in Moi University to study law after finishing his studies at Lenana School and Tharaka B School. In 1998, he earned his Bachelor of Laws (LLB).
He then went on to the University of Pretoria in South Africa to pursue a Master’s degree in law in International Human Rights Law and Democracy. In the year 2000, he graduated from the university.
He received his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in international law from the South African University two years later.
Employment
He was hired as a law lecturer at Moi University shortly after leaving university as a new graduate, a job he held until 2003.
In 2004, the Senator joined the University of Nairobi, where he ascended through the ranks to become a senior lecturer in international law and the Director of the Public Law Department.
His respected background in international law has also allowed him to act as a consultant for international organizations such as the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), among others.
As a lawyer, the Senator is best known for representing Deputy President William Ruto before the International Criminal Court (ICC), where he was one of the DP’s lawyers.
He returned to active politics in 2013 when he ran for the Tharaka Nithi senatorial seat, which he won in the defunct The National Alliance (TNA) and reclaimed in 2017 on a Jubilee Party platform.
In recent years, he has become a staunch supporter of the DP, and he was instrumental in the development of the Kenya Kwanza Alliance, as well as the power-sharing agreement.
Family
Despite being a prominent member of the Kindiki family, the DP ally has kept his family hidden.
Prof Isaiah Kindiki, his brother, is a staunch supporter of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and the Azimio One Kenya faction.
Jonah Nyagah Kindiki is a professor of soil science and Isiah possesses a PhD in soil science.
On the other hand, Prof Stephen Kithinji Kindiki, is a professor of Linguistics at Daystar University.
