Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is already making waves with his newly unveiled political outfit, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), which has quickly attracted both attention and financial backing even before its official launch.
In an interview on Friday, May 16, Gachagua revealed that the party had received nearly KSh 100 million in donations from supporters and partners eager to invest in what he describes as a grassroots movement for change.
“DCP is a people’s party. I am not going to fund it because I don’t have those kinds of resources. It will be run by its members,” he said. “As of last week, we were almost at Sh100 million, and that was before the official launch.”
The party, he noted, will be largely driven by young people, whom he believes are ready to take charge of Kenya’s future through progressive leadership and reform.
Gachagua confirmed that the DCP will be formally launched in June 2025, and he appealed for additional support to help fund the event and ongoing party activities. A paybill number, bank accounts, and a dollar account for diaspora supporters are set to be rolled out soon.
“We are asking those who believe in liberating this country to support this party, even if it’s a small amount. No money is too little,” he added.
Central to the DCP’s mission, Gachagua said, is empowering the youth and creating a platform where ordinary citizens have a voice and a stake in the country’s direction.
“This party will be led by young, dynamic leaders who understand what the people need. We want to bring real change, not just talk about it,” he stated.
Supporters have already donated vehicles and logistical support, but Gachagua said more resources are needed to open and furnish party offices across the country.
With rising public frustration over the current political climate, the DCP’s citizen-first approach may find fertile ground among voters seeking change. As the countdown to June begins, attention now turns to whether the party can sustain its early momentum and deliver on its promises.
